TOP telco, Globacom Limited and the Ekiti State Government have concluded plans to launch a partnership which will create jobs for about 1,000 youths in the state. As part of the deal, Globacom will provide Public Call Office (PCO) facilities including 1,000 units of parasols, power box, handsets, tables, chairs, T-shirts, caps, hawker jackets and recharge cards worth several millions. According to the Head of Globacom’s Public Sector Department, Mr. Tunde Amunikoro, the project which is being coordinated for Ekiti State by the State’s Job Creation and Employment Agency, is designed primarily as a poverty alleviation scheme. Amunikoro explained that Globacom’s impetus for the project goes beyond profit. “In Globacom we are driven by the need to provide affordable and quality telecoms services and we are also driven by the need to economically empower members of our operating environment”, he said. The company has so far taken its poverty alleviation efforts to 17 states including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, while plans are in top gear to reach out to more states. By doing this the company said it intends to get more and more Nigerian youths off the streets into gainful employment.
